DAMAGING THE CAUSE

I just came across the city clearing -crew. They were at an underpass at Brook and Broadway. While that underpass may draw one or two persons to station themselves on the concrete, the adjacent intersection is arguably the place where most of our unhoused friends gather.

The regular array of vehicles making this run, included four police cars, two city cars, a garbage truck, and what is pictured below, is what I perceived to be a new vehicle. At least it’s new to me. Basically, after the clearing occurs, this truck, comes with a water cannon of sorts that sprays huge amounts of water across the sidewalk as it drive slow slowly along. While on some level, I understand the intention, what I see is this: I see a large orange truck shooting water out of a cannon to “wash the stench” from the sidewalk, as dozens of our Unhoused friends look on. Maybe I’m being over sensitive, which I can be, but I just don’t think so.

And yes, at least one gentleman from Homeless services is still wearing a gun, and a bulletproof vest that is in emblazoned with the words Homeless Services on the front. Sir, will you please stop doing that. You are literally flanked by police officers.

Sir, personally, I would argue that you’re not in danger, but you are hurting the cause; the work of those who serve on the streets.. Outreach Volunteer’s are out here all day, and sometimes through the night. You, should know this better than anyone. The city’s HEART team, honestly does go out and helps alongside us is a part of YOUR division.

It can sometimes take us years to form bonds with our friends. And it’s not a good look when they think someone who does what they think we do, is packing.

So, once again, I am respectfully asking you to stop. There’s nothing wrong with you being there, and perhaps providing guidance to those who are being displaced. Let’s face it, while these clearings are often called relocations by the city, no one is being relocated. They are simply being moved along, and possibly cited, or arrested.

Over the last 18 years, Exit 0 has evolved and adapted. Through every season, our core mission remains unchanged: to meet people exactly where they are, and to show the love of Jesus to everyone we encounter.

We want to share an update regarding our Sunday’s moving forward. We will no longer be hosting Church Anywhere. We were informed by First Capital Christian Church they will no longer be partnering with Exit 0 due to differences in biblical beliefs. (related to our post on 6/1) We have partnered with FCCC for over 15 years, and while we are sad to see this chapter close, we fully respect their path.

For us, our biblical beliefs compel us to stand on the margins. When we look at the life of Jesus, we see someone who consistently bypassed the religious establishments to sit with, love, and advocate for the people society pushed aside. Loving our neighbors— ALL our neighbors—isn't a secondary issue for us; it is at the very heart of the gospel we try to practice every day.

We want to say a deep, heartfelt thank you to everyone from First Capital who has volunteered, donated, and loved our friends on the street over the years. Your impact matters, and our door is always open to anyone who wants to serve with love and acceptance for all.

As we step into this next chapter, we are taking some time to prayerfully and thoughtfully restructure what our Sunday service looks like. We appreciate your prayers and patience through this transition.
***Edit***
FCCC was not providing meals. They provided a modist financial donation and Church Anywhere (a video Church service) for those we serve.

Our mission has always been simple: to follow the example of radical, unconditional love. We believe that if Jesus were walking the streets today, He wouldn't be standing on the sidelines of judgment—He would be right there on the margins, sitting alongside those who have been rejected, overlooked, and left out in the cold. That is exactly where we choose to stand.

When people are experiencing homelessness, they don't need theological debates—they need a safe haven, a warm meal, and to know their inherent worth.

The reality is that LGBTQ+ youth and adults are disproportionately affected by homelessness, often because they faced rejection from the very places and families meant to shield them. We refuse to participate in that rejection.

To our LGBTQ+ neighbors, especially those fighting for survival on the streets: We see you. We love you. Our doors, our hearts, and our community remain wide open to you—not just this month, but every single day.

Faith isn't about drawing lines to keep people out; it’s about breaking down walls to let everyone in.
