Welcome to the New State Sign of Indiana. Yesterday, news broke yet again about the clearing of several unhoused camps near the Eastern Blvd I65 area in Southern Indiana. The Indiana State Police plan to arrive at 8:30 AM on Friday, October 23, to wake residents, run background checks, and issue No Trespassing orders to everyone present. In a rather ironic twist, those facing eviction will be handed backpacks containing dead-end resources and food. This sudden action leaves many feeling unprepared and anxious, especially with the lack of signage or prior notice from the state about the impending bulldozing of this area.

This situation raises numerous urgent questions about what will happen to the belongings of those affected. There is uncertainty about where these items will go or how they will be stored after the clearing. Moreover, many of the unhoused individuals have pets, making it even more challenging to find shelters that will accept them. The gap between available resources and the needs of this community feels immense, showcasing a system that lacks compassion for those in need.

The harsh reality is further reflected in policies like House Bill 285, which many view as a setback for the rights and protections of vulnerable populations. The phrase “To serve and protect” seems to apply selectively, leaving the unhoused community without the support they desperately need. It is disheartening to see agencies collaborating with officials who endorse such bills instead of advocating for the well-being of those they are supposed to serve. This situation highlights a critical disconnect between government actions and the urgent needs of the people affected.
